As a former Giants player I have had quite a few people comment about the Giants and their entry into the World Series. I think they
want me to hoot and holler…?
When I get those comments I am not really sure how to react. I currently work
for the Brewers organization, I grew up a Reds fan in Reds country and I was a
Giant in the mid 90's. So it makes me ask the question what drives your
loyalty, your affinity for a sports team.
For me for it’s professional and personal, professionally I want the brew crew
to do well.. I am part of the building process and am part of a large group of
folks building a foundation working towards long term success and eventual World Series winners.
Personally my connection with teams is based on people, people who I know, whom
I trust and who I have been on the field fighting together for a common goal.
Funny thing, most but not all the people I have played with are retired just
like me. When the Giants went to the World Series against the Angels most of my
teammates from the Giants were still on the team , my heart and soul was torn
when they lost. There are others still
out there, Bengie Molina teammate of mine with the Angels in 1997, Ron Wotus,
bench coach was my manager in 1996 and of course Mike Murphy the best clubhouse
guy in the Major Leagues is still with the Giants for his umpteenth year.
I wish the Giants well but I also appreciate the huge feat of the Rangers
making the World Series for the very
first time. I am a true fan of the game now and appreciate it's every twist and turn
and now since I am involved on the Player Development side I know the some of the difficulties
that an organization may go through to build a World Series participant.
Why do you root for your team? I bet there is something deeply seeded in your
loyalty. Giants or Rangers?
For me it's difficult, but I will enjoy the outcome either way because in the long run I am still a fan of the game.
